The starting point for this quilt was our favourite of Annabelle’s father’s cotton kimonos. Once unpicked, as before, it returned to its original bolt of fabric. In this case a series of relatively thin strips. We decided to further explore the idea of the ‘figure’ and used these strips of well worn fabric more or less like the broad brush of a paint stroke to form a reclining figure. The organic stripes of the kimono are off-set by a series of more formal striped shirts that form the background.

As with Quilts 48 and 49, which we made after a trip to Los Angeles together, we decided to look at Richard Neutra’s VDL Residence designed in 1932 and it’s relationship to the natural world that surrounds it. The starting point of the black was a large black tunic originally belonging to chef Jeremy Lee’s with pink cloth buttons.
