This is the second quilt of three that respond to the three woollen Welsh steel workers vests and three cotton kimonos we inherited. In both cases we were taken by the economy of the pattern cutting. With both types of garment, they return to their original bolt of fabric once unpicked. We decided to make three quilts with a welsh steel workers vest in conversation with a kimono that work on similar principles. Vest on the front, kimono on the back.

Unlike the organic, complicated abstract shapes that appear in the negative spaces of the clothes in Quilt 12, we were delighted by the strength of the large geometric forms generated by these unpicked garments.

In this case, the blue that infills the brown woollen vest is made up from a collection of Oxford cotton shirts. The red elements are there as a reminder of their more complex pattern cutting.
