We inherited three woollen Welsh steel workers vests and three cotton kimonos. In both cases we were taken by the economy of the pattern cutting. With both types of garment, they return to their original bolt of fabric once unpicked. We decided to make three quilts with a welsh steel workers vest in conversation with a kimono that work on similar principles. Vest on the front, kimono on the back.

Unlike the organic, complicated abstract shapes that appear in the negative spaces of the clothes in Quilt 12, we were delighted by the strength of the large geometric forms generated by these unpicked garments.
