We were given three of the Architect, John Miller’s iconic shirts by his partner, Su. In a similar vein to Quilts 37 and 38, where we explored the idea of the quilts as monoliths. We decided to take each of the pattern shapes from the shirts, surround them in a black outline to strengthen each piece as an individual element, and effectively construct imagined towers or figures from the pieces. The compositions give us the notion of gravity, although positioned in an impossible state of imbalance. Each shirt forms two ‘constructions’. The pink shirt Quilts 58 and 61, the blue Quilts 59 and 62 and the green Quilts 60 and 63.
On the reverse of this set of three quilts we separated out the three elements of the South Elevation of the house at Pillwood in Cornwall that John designed for his family and have positioned these relative to their fellow two elements on the corresponding quilts.
